Beyond the Sea, 5

“While staying on the side of a mountain overlooking the sea in southern Spain I experienced a night of natural violence – a massive electrical storm that went on for several hours and felt like the end of the world . As it dissipated it provoked a breathless swelling twitching quiescence – a kind of post orgasmic conciliation between sky and sea.”
“The series of silk screen prints produced from the paintings done during the storm employ a very fluid use of line – referencing Japanese prints or Chinese calligraphy. They can be viewed as a finely distilled essence of my larger visceral works.”

Elephant
2014, lithograph

“I have a sensitivity for all things made of metal and the function and beauty of industry. Elephant is part of a set of lithographs called Ghost Series. The main image is part of a photographic record I made of disappearing industries. Mostly there is no evidence left now. I reworked the original negative using a very personal process and added a drawing of moths wings – these symbolise the soul of the crane and the industries and people and skills and community that were shaped by the integrity of the labour and toughness of materials and process.”
